10 Surprising Facts About Mickey Mouse You've Never Imagined

Walt Disney introduced Mickey Mouse 87 years ago today — and we have to say, he's looking pretty SWELL for his age!

Since November 18, 1928, Mickey has become increasingly more famous. Movie appearances, television shows, expanding both Disneyland and Disney World, and of course, endearing the hearts of millions of people.

  1. Mickey Mouse was the first cartoon character ever to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was given his star in 1978 to commemorate his 50th anniversary.
  2. Mickey is estimated to be 2 ft. 3 inches tall and to weigh approximately 23 pounds!
  3. Walt Disney has said that Mickey and Minnie are married — but only in private. They've never had an on-screen wedding. But the man and woman that voiced Minnie and Mickey actually were married.
  4. The first words Mickey ever spoke in a cartoon were: "hot dogs!"
  5. Originally, Walt Disney dubbed Mickey "Mortimer." But Walt's wife convinced him to change it to "Mickey." Mortimer ended up being the name of a new character — Mickey's rival.
  6. Throughout Mickey's career, he's dressed a total of 175 outfits! (Minnie's worn over 200!)
  7. Mickey Mouse only has four fingers for two reasons. The first was that Disney believed five fingers were too many for a mouse. The second was to save the company money!
  8. Some of Mickey's signature expressions are "oh, boy," "gosh," "that sure is swell," and "aw, gee!"
  9. "Hidden Mickeys" started as a joke between Walt Disney and other Imagineers. But word spread and now people have made a game out of searching for Hidden Mickeys in Disney movies and all of the parks.
