The Most Iconic Moments For '90s Disney Fans

As children of the ’90s, Disney was a major influence in our lives. The Disney animation renaissance, the birth of Pixar, the rise of Disney Channel, and so many other moments made the ’90s awesome for Disney and Disney fans. Here are some of the most iconic moments from our favorite decade gone by:

1989 – Disney’s Hollywood Studios

True, the park opened in 1989, but it was ’90s kids who truly reaped the benefits of Walt Disney World’s third Park. Muppet Vision 3-D, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Fantasmic!, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster all opened throughout the ’90s and made the park a must-visit location.

1990 to 1997 – The Disney Afternoon

DuckTales, Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers, Adventures of the Gummi Bears, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, Gargoyles … we bet we got at least one of these show’s theme songs stuck in your head. These amazing animated programs made our after-school hours chock-full of Disney fun.

1991 – Belle and Beast Dance in the Ballroom

Tale as old as time … well, as old as 1991, that is. Seeing Belle and Beast step into the ballroom and dance to the titular song “Beauty and the Beast” defined romance and Disney animation for a generation.

1992 – “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin

Aladdin not only changed the face of animation, but also the voice. Robin William’s unforgettable turn as Genie ushered in an era of countless celebrities giving voice to Disney characters.

1994 – “The Circle of Life” and Rafiki-ing from The Lion King

When The Lion King was released in 1994, it changed animation forever and delivered the greatest opening to any movie ever (don’t argue with us on this) with “The Circle of Life.” How can you not be moved when “NANTS INGONYAMA BAGITHI BABA” comes blaring through your TV speakers? Plus, Rafiki lifting baby Simba into the air began a pet photo trend that is still going strong over 20 years later.

1995 – Toy Story and the Rise of Pixar

It’s been over 20 years since the release of Toy Story, and we’ve still got a friend in Pixar Animation Studios. The friendship between Woody and Buzz Lightyear way back in ‘95 led to Finding Nemo, Cars, Inside Out, and so many more of our favorite films.

1995 – A Goofy Movie

Gawrsh! Before A Goofy Movie, we knew nothing about the Perfect Cast, Powerline, or the majesty of Cheez-Wiz. This movie changed everything.

1996 – “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas

Obviously, Pocahontas gave us all serious hair goals, but she also taught us the value of respecting the earth and standing up for our beliefs. We’re still trying to paint with all the colors of the wind.

1997 – Hades from Hercules

Is Hades, the god of the Underworld from Hercules, responsible for the amount of dry humor and irreverence present in ’90s kids today? We think yes.

1998 – Mulan

Mulan was the heroine we were all craving in 1998 and still adore today. She defines girl power and gets down to business to be our favorite warrior ever.

1999 – Tree Surfing from Tarzan

As a kid growing up in the ’90s, there was nothing cooler than seeing Tarzan shred the branches of the jungle canopy using nothing but his bare feet, although, trying it ourselves never worked out well.

1999 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Walt Disney World’s fourth park opened its gates in 1999, giving way to such attractions as: It’s Tough to Be a Bug, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest, and Kali River Rapids. Guests have been going wild for the park ever since.
